Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. An air conditioner or heat pump uses its refrigerant to cool and dehumidify the air before it’s sent back through your home. This liquid is housed within the coils of your cooling system, but one of the most typical refrigerants used for many, many years – the R-22 (Freon) is now being replaced in response to environmental concerns. In fact, this phase-out was mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be in production. Introducing R-410A Chlorine-free and ozone-friendly, R-410A is recognized by the EPA. That means it’ll keep your AC running cool without harming the environment. Additionally, Lennox’s most highly efficient systems are designed to use this AC refrigerant, which can help your system perform efficiently. The same Lennox systems are known for reliability, quiet operation and enhanced dehumidification, so you’ll stay comfortable. Additional Considerations At Schagrin Gas Company in Middletown, our cooling models can work with R-410A. If your system was made before 2010, you may want to consider replacing your cooling system now, before R-22 is completely phased out. Some manufacturers carry alternate refrigerants such as R-407C, R-438A and R-422, however, they may not work with an R-22 AC or heat pump and could compromise your system’s performance.
